Reading & Maths
July 12th, 2008
Hello
My daughter is struggling at school with reading and maths. She is always too scared to give anything “a go” because she is afraid of getting things wrong. she is in year 6 and at this stage things are not getting any better. I always wondered if she might be dyslexic, mainly because she messes up small words and her b’s and d’s are back to front. The school have not suggested she might be dyslexic, so I’m out to find some help! Who in Tasmania can help us both? Can you Help?

hi,
thanks for your email. you and your daughter need to know WHY she is having trouble at school. children that do not keep up and are bright learn differently from other children. they perceive the world in a slightly different way and therefore need teaching in a slightly different way. if she has problems with the small irregularly spelt words - the ones i call stupid words - then she most likely does not recall the look of a word. this is typical of a dyslexic.
she does not, necessarily need a label but you do need to know how she learns and then you know to teach her.
there is a tick box test on this site that you could start with. there are more tests in the book dyslexia - how to win. however if you read this book and it seems to be describing your daughter exactly you can pretty well know that she is a classic and the book then tells you exactly how to teach her, which is the important thing.
i do not know of anyone in tasmania but if there anyone out there please contact me so i can refer people to you,
cheers
dawn
