Does your child have Dyslexia
December 19th, 2006
When screening for dyslexia some markers to look for are reading, writing and spelling problems.
However, dyslexia is not limited to these problems and even though a child has these problems s/he may not have dyslexia. These difficulties in the dyslexic child put them under huge stress and disadvantage them in a classroom environment.

The brain of the dyslexic is different from the brain of a non dyslexic and they perceive the world differently. Because of this, dyslexics display problems in some areas of learning and excel in others. Dyslexics have short time visual memory and/or short term auditory memory difficulties. This can mean that the dyslexic cannot remember or recall the look of a word or that they cannot remember or recall the sounds in a word.
At least five percent of the population are severely dyslexic. It can be an inherited condition. This means that there is almost certainly a dyslexic in every classroom.
If there is a pupil in your class or child in your family who seems bright verbally with good ideas but has difficulty in expressing him/herself in writing it is possible that he/she is dyslexic. It is also possible that another less obvious child could have this disability”. (Dyslexia a Guide for Teachers)
