Enquiry about my child … please help

February 19th, 2010

Hi Dawn, my 6 year old boy has been diagonosed with dyspraxia, add, dyslexic and possibly asbergers. He started school last year and had a difficult year. After much debate I finally gave into my pediatrician and put him on ritalen, purely to help him focus and concentrate for longer to learn. This year he is in the reading recovery program, unfortunately in nsw dispraxics cannot get funding for a teachers aid. It is extremely frustrating for these kids because of the lack of support they receive. Kieren is about 2 years behind with writing and reading, he is already noticing and wondering why he is not writing and reading like the others. Could you give me some advice on how to help him. How much does it cost to go to your school, what are the fees per term?

hi,
Unfortunately we do not yet have a school we are trying very hard to get funding. We are in Perth Wa.
he cannot be dyslexia and asbergers. thy are 2 completely different ways of thinking. He ix also unlikely to be both dyslexic and dyspraxic but it is possible. If he is not catching up with his schooling on the drugs then he should not be on them.

i’m currently assessing kids to find out what actually they have and then showing parents how to teach them using my teaching materials which are soon to be published. I am doing this through the use of SKYPE although some are people are actually preferring to come vast distances to see me.

my “Dead easy phonics program” will be out soon and this is aimed at parents so that they will be able easily to teach their kids themselves. although you have to stop the ordinary school homework to find the time.
hope this helps
dawn

Hi, I have come across your site while trying to find information for my husband who has always had trouble with reading and writing from early age and so was getting into trouble at school and basically labelled trouble and pushed to the side with little help. I am now wondering about the dyslexia and trying to find more information about testing etc to see if this could be any reason for his trouble, we live in Perth WA, if you could pass on any information on where to go, what path to take it would be much appreciatied. Thank you

    Hi Jennifer,
Your email came to the blog rather than me personally so I am giving to answer this way. Hope you find this. My web site person is in hospital at the moment and I wish her well, so I cannot access your email address.
I do assessments and live in Rockingham just down the road from you.
I charge $200 and ensure that everyone knows exactly why they are having the problems they are having and help move them forward with learning programs strategies etc.
    hope this helps
    Cheers
    Dawn

    Hi
    Fiona
I am sorry you have had to struggle so long.

I work in Sutherland every Tuesday during school term. Would this be close enough for you? I don’t know anyone in Wollongong itself. I will try to find out if you can’t make it to Sutherland.

My daughter is 7 next week, grade 2. She is an excellent reader and is on the highest level of reading books in the school (books for up to year 7). She was finding maths quite hard so I sent her to tutoring for some extended help so she could improve in that area. She is now doing well with her maths and is in the top group for her class with that.
Now the students are having to start writing sentence answers she is struggling with it. Her writing is neat but quite slow and her sentences tend to be quite short or they make little sense. Her teachers suggested that it is unusual for a student to have such high reading and comprehension skills, plus high oral skills to not translate this into writing. I spoke to her tutorer and she thinks that my daughter may have Dysgraphia and I should have her tested for this. I have completed the tick tests you mention on the web site and she was 8/45 for the Dyslexia test and 4/35 for the dyspraxia test. She is a left handed that can use either hand for scissors or sport and she does insert capitals throughout her work. She also can spell words correctly in a spelling test but in a sentence may write it incorrectly in a few different ways.
I am quite stressed by this as I thought she was doing so well and now they are thinking she has a learning problem, what do you suggest?
I’m using some of Dianne Riggs narrative lessons with her to help her but not sure if I should just do the test to find out either way or are they just trying to label the behavior?
    Thanks

To all those parents searching for answers, there is a wonderful place called Dalwood Assessment Centre and Palm Avenue School in Seaforth NSW. I suggest you make contact with them. The school has been around for about 30 years and has 100% success rate with children that are lucky enough to go there. My son is 10 years old and has dyslexia. We tried everything to help him over the years and he is currently completing a 4 week intensive literacy program in Sydney at Palm Avenue School. His confidence and self esteem have already improved and I will be forever indebted to the work the teachers and staff have done with my son, and how they have helped him. The unfortunate thing is that the NSW Health and Education Department are currently trying to shut this amazing school down. It is the only school I know of in Australia for children with learning problems. Please help us save this precious school for our children.

    Hi Dawn,
My 8 year old daughter has been having a lot of difficulty in both literacy and numercy at school as well as rather poor handwriting, (she often grips her pencil quite odley and i always remind her to try to hold it correctly) , someone suggested she may have dyslexia. My GP also recomended that we have and audiology assesment. After many phone calls around Cairns (far north QLD) i finally got onto someone who said they tested for dyslexia. It cost $550, the same week my daughter also had the audiology test at a different establishment which showed that she did have a auditory processing dissorder and the her left right brain were not communicating correctly and her right ear is the strongest. I got the results from the Dyslexia / learning dissorder test a day after the auditory test which says there is nothing wrong with my daughter and everything is in the average range. Is this possible? If she is having an auditory processing problems should this have show in a dyslexia / learning dissorder assesment? the report says they used the 4th Edition WISC-IV and the 2nd Edition WIAT – II to determine if there was a learning dissorder.

Prior to following up having all these tests done i had come across your website and did the tick test for both dyslexia and dyspraxia and she scored 30 and 24 respectively.

I am a little confused that this dyslexia / learning dissorder assesment says she is all in the average range but she is having so much difficulty at school, i would really love to get your opinion on the different outcomes of both these assesments (dyslexia and the audology), with 1 indicating there is a definate auditory processing problem and the other saying she is fine and normal.

All the psycologist (who did dyslexia / learning dissorder test) said when i mentioned the auditory test has shown definate problems was “isnt that interesting” and when i pointed out that my daughter is really below average in her school work she said “she should not be” based on the dyslexia / learning dissorder test results, and there must be a problem in the classroom to explain her low grades.

Your website is fantastic and thankyou for providing all the informaitn you do and taking the time to answer all these questions.

I really hope you have a chance to get back to me soon, as i am now quite confused about these test results
    .
    Kind Regards
    Nicole

    Hi,
I am getting quite concerned about my 6 year old son. He is in Year 1 and he is having problems in the classroom as well as out of the classroom with instructions/listening. I have had his hearing tested a couple of years ago and will do this again but I don’t think this is the problem. He is able to do the work at the moment but the teacher has to continually remind him what he is mean’t to be doing. He has quite low confidence now and says that when he asks the teacher what he is meant to be doing she says you should have been listening. When I ask my son about this he says he is listening but he soon forgets or doesn’t understand. He often is off in his own little world. I do not know where to go for help.

    Thanks
    Shannon

    Hi Shannon

Your son may have a language processing disorder . Speech therapy assessment and screening for an attention difficulty such as ADHD by a pediatrician. Some people need a bit of extra time and quiet to help understanding . Check if he is really “spaced out” and can’t respond, or is preoccupied with his own imagination. This may determine if he is having absence seizures ( fairly common in children). Repeated absences can cause children to forget what has been recently said and to be a bit vague. I am speaking from experience as a parent of a lad who has epilepsy. Of course I am only suggesting that this be checked as it is a possibility. It is often overlooked as it is not “fashionable” and in the limelight. Children may seem to have features many different conditions

My son was lucky enought to be placed in a langage support class (SCL),This was a small class with 8 students with a great teacher, and this class has been a great help to him.
your local childhood centre could help you locate a class (i hope)
However it looks like funding for these classes is about to be changed. and classes like this one may not continue into the future. I think we have to let everyone one know there is a demand for these classes to continue.

    hi,
just found this website today. I’ve read so far that you assess children, but i was wondering if that is a limit?
I’m 17 (18 in may) and live in Parmelia WA.
I am pritty damn shore I have dyslexia, but i was never officialy tested or treated, this hasn’t been a major drama becasue i could always find alternative methods to get the work done… only now it is, i’m reapeating year 12 at North Lake Senior Campus and finding it extreamly difficult, i think this is because of dyslexia…
becasue i want to go to Curtin Uni next year i really need to get assesed so that i can get the suport and stuff, as it is I’m freaking out becasue i have to do a TEE english and… well am just not capable of that atm…

so i was wondering if you can assess someone in my situation as well?
    cheers,
    Kassandra.
