Dyslexia – test
December 18th, 2008
This came through to us but I wanted to share incase it assists anyone else.
I am a mother of an 8 year old who seem really bright, but lately, we have been told that he is 18 months behind his classmates. We want him tested for dyslexia.
We live in Melbourne and was hoping you could help point us to a place to get him tested.
hi,
thanks for your email.
there are tick box tests on the site and further tests in the book Dyslexia How to Win. unfortunately i have tried to track down other testing centres but have not found any in melbourne. if anyone knows of a good centre there please contact me.
however it is not the label that is important it is in knowing how to teach your child and how he thinks and learns that is important. so if he is dyslexic, and this is the most common cause of bright kids failing at school, this book and the other materials i have for sale on this site, will show you how to teach him and catch him up.
i have just finished a complete phonics course for dyslexic and dypraxic kids and this will for sale downloadable soon at $20.
the dyslexic package plus this will then enable you to teach your kid yourself in literacy. i am working on a maths program but this will not be finished for a while as i am so very busy.
hope this helps. get back to me if you have any problems.
yours
dawn

Hi Dawn,
I have a son who has just turned 12 starting high school next year. He is grade 3 standard in Maths and maybe grade 5 in English after 4 years of private tution. I have had him tested for everything I could think of but no-one has ever said the words Dyslexia or Dyscalculia. He can tick off every item on the check list to a tee. I still get told I am an overbearing mother and to let him be. Should I just do this and let him do his best or keep going till I get to the bottom of it? At present he is being seen by an Audiologist but we are only 1/2 way through testing. He believes my son is interesting. Who can test for Dyslexia in Melbourne?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Sue

hi Sue
Thanks for your email. This is so familiar. We are about to set up a parents’ group so that you can all talk to each other about this as i am getting way too busy here. But needless to say if you can tick every box then he is most likely severely dyslexic.
Firstly I hope he is getting and Auditory Processing test this will be the aspect of his hearing , i think, that is defective.
Secondly there is a SPELD organization in Melbourne in the phone book. in my book Dyslexia _ how to Win it tells everything you need to know to understand dyslexia and lots of teaching information and games etc. And Case studies. There are 2 chapters on maths for dyslexics with Dyscalculia but i have yet to complete the book entirely on maths.
Getting him assessed is just the beginning. Once you have him assessed you have to track down the teaching methods as the school will most likely not know. That is why i wrote this book and am selling it so cheaply.
good luck
cheers
dawn
