Do I have Dyslexia?

December 18th, 2008

I dont quite know where to start. I always had to try really hard at school and didnt really get the marks I though I would. I have always stuggled a bit with english and maths. My spelling can sometimes leave alot to be desired and as for maths unless I have a calcuator forget it.

I have found the last few years work has been an issue. I am a product manager for a stationery company which means that there is a bit of checking samples and proof reading involved. I absolutely hate it because no matter how hard I try there is always something that I miss.

I just dont seem to see the words properly and therefore mistakes are made.

My husband often makes jokes at me for confusing left and right although I know exactly what I mean it doesnt always come out that way.

It generally takes me along time to read a book and I find that I can read a page and not know what I have just read. The words just dont seem to sink in.

If i am writing numbers or working with numbers I generally transpose the numbers, eg. 385 becomes 358 without me even noticing.

There have been a few things especially at work that have come about that has made me think perhaps I should get tested. My Aunt and Cousin have told me that they are dyslexic and they thing that I am to.

I have always had an artistic streak and this has been the only thing that I have done well at since I was at school.

Having taken all these things into consideration, what should I do, how do I go about getting tested?

I really need help on this one.

Thanks for taking the time to read my message and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

hi,
What you write does sound like a pretty good description of dyslexia to me. however why don’t you do the tick test on Dyslexia Testing and then you will have a better idea.

it is an inherited condition. they have isolated the gene.

thanks
dawn

Well, ever since you start to hear about this situation you start to wonder if you have it. These tips will help you decide if you do. If most of your answers are yes , then you need to speak with an adult or even your doctor.

1- Are you having trouble telling right from left?
2- Is it difficult to learn your times tables?
3- Do you see that you are reading slower ?
    4- Is your writing messy?
5- Do you seem to have trouble reading or writng big words?
6- Do you feel uncomfortable talking in a crowd or even in class?
If most of your answers were yes – then there is a strong chance of you having dyslexia. Don’t worry – and don’t pnic. Here are a few more details.
1- people who are bright and inteligent may have lacks in concentration
2- people who excell in drama, music (arts) may have some things that fit in the criteria for having dyslexia. I just had a math test. I could have gotten a 90 but i left one question blank because i couln’t read it. It was very easy to read “Solve the problems you see below – show your work” I didn’t . I feel so stupid but atleast i took control and told my parents.

    * If you think you have dyslexia or any symtoms please talk to someone!!!!! i DIDNT even read the comment above until just now and everything i have wrote will help you!
