I'd love for my kids to learn to type on an easier keyboard but unfortunetly we live in world that is full of qwertiies and if they learned on a different one they would never get a job because all employers - well nearly all - have qwerties! Studies do seem to show that there is actually very little difference once you've learnt how to use a keyboard.

I just found your site by searching for something else. There are alternative keyboards

Jared Diamond has a lovely essay on "The Curse of Qwerty"

http://www.geocities.com/malibu_malv/curse_qwerty.html

( don't have as many problems with QWERTY as Diamond mentions, as I am left handed.

However, I'm stuck with QWERTY -- I've tried several times to convert to a Dvorak keyboard

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard

But it seems that 40+ years of typing on a QWERY has worn grooves in my brain.

Perhaps your young students can be Dvorak'ers from the outset.
